FoodLit – TEACHING AND LEARNING OF FOOD AND NUTRITION

Under the NutriGreen School Project conducted by the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, schools have established school gardens to help students learn about food, nutrition and agriculture. Grade 7 students of Dambadeniya Madhya Maha Vidyalaya celebrated a Harvest Day during their Practical and Technology Skills period.
The students harvested brinjals from their school garden and used them to prepare different food dishes. Through this activity, they learned how vegetables grown in their own garden can be used in daily meals. Students also learned how to extract seeds from vegetables to use for the next planting season in the school garden. As the school vacation was about to begin, the students sold the extra harvest to school staff. This helped them learn about agricultural entrepreneurship.
This Harvest Day was a fun and memorable experience, where students learned how to harvest, cook, share and enjoy the food they grew in their own garden
